Traffic Calming Measures

This traffic circle in Midtown area is unique, because it is the only one that showcases a set of art work from a local artist.

A local metal sculpture, Kristen Hoard, who knew about the upcoming traffic circle at the intersection close to her studio, offered to create a series of 4 sculptures, “People” to be installed on the circle.

I was privileged to work with the artist to make the art installation possible. I designed this traffic circle in such a way to present the art work the best way possible.

Some of the residents around the 36th Street and 24th Avenue were insisting on installation of a pair of traffic circles at the intersections of 36th Street with 23rd & 24th Avenues.

The relatively narrow widths of the intersecting streets in these locations, in comparison to average 48’ for most residential streets, posed a challenge.

I needed to create effective traffic circles, yet much smaller than the average size. They needed to create enough deflection for a passenger car, while accommodating to the fire trucks.

Placement of 4 signs on each circle, as normally is done, was yet another issue. So I designed an entirely new bracket system that can support all 4 signs on a single post, to be placed in the center of the traffic circles.

This traffic circle has the most elaborate designs among all.

It has a solar powered double-lamp light fixture at the center, it has 4 landscape areas, and beautiful river rocks between landscape sections.

The Apron is textured green concrete, and the top is stamped brown concrete.

I designed the 4 sign holders as integrated parts of the structure.
