Having, and following standards in any type of work, particularly in design and engineering business, is essential. Engineering divisions of the City of Sacramento follow, among other documents and resources, the City's Standard Specifications. The Traffic Engineering Section, in addition, uses other publications and manuals by FHWA and the California Department of Transportation. The main go-to standard and guidebook for traffic engineers in California is the CA-MUTCD (California version of the Manual on Unified Traffic Control Devices). When I started working for the City, there were some other sets of drawings we used as guides for our work. During the course of my career, I updated many of those drawings and "standards" or "sample" drawings (like various types of crosswalk, various types of speed humps, chokers & bulb-outs, etc.).
For some items I created entirely new sets of "sample" drawings, like Roundabouts, Traffic Circles, Pedestrian Islands, Speed Tables, Raised Crosswalks, Angled Parking, and a few signs.
