Pedestrian islands are my favorite traffic calming device because they are very useful!
They can be as narrow as six feet and as long the designer needs them to be.
They can be landscaped or hardscaped.
They divide the road effectively.
They narrow the street.
They shorten walking distance for pedestrians and provide refuge in the middle.
They create a safer crossing for people with disabilities.
They are easy to design and relatively inexpensive to construct.
