My first roundabout project at the intersection of Rush River and Windbridge in south Sacramento.

The two intersecting streets had almost the same width, and ADT; which made geometric design easier.

Sidewalks and curb ramps all around needed to be rebuilt.

Both streets were Bus Routes, and there were a couple of bus stops within the project limits. Because of that, we made the bus stop re-built and reinforced before putting Slurry Seal on the road.

The central island was not excavated, but tree pots were placed and irrigation lines were installed.

The apron initially was 2” to 3.5” thick, and built over the existing road (see drawing below). This soon proved not to be adequate at all, and cracked. So, it was removed and replaced with something much stronger.

See apron design detail in previous sections (Sample Drawings: ROUNDABOUT).

On each approach, at the yield lines, we installed two R1-2 Yield signs.

On each approach on the splitter islands installed a R4-7 sign.

The two signs on this page were what we commonly used for traffic circles on the central islands and for advance warning We used same ones for this roundabout too.

Later I changed some of the signs on our “Sample” drawing to reflect what was nationally recommended.
